Learning to make pancakes...

So I'm not really much of a cook... at all.  I just never learned how to cook much of anything while I was growing up.  So, as an effort to become a more rounded mommy and wife, every once in a while I challenge myself to make something new.  Before today, I never made pancakes (by myself).  One time like 5 years ago my boyfriend at the time showed me how, but that was it.

And boy... was it an adventure!  Not only did I make a huge mess, but I also learned how to make an edible pancake!  I learned that they get stuck to the pan if you don't use enough oil/butter.  I learned that a metal spatula works best.  I learned not to wait too long to flip them.  I learned not to flip them too soon.  I learned that you can sort of tell if it's okay to flip them by lifting up the edge and seeing if the top jiggles and gets all messed up.  I also learned that it works better if you don't press down on the top of the pancake with the spatula- they are NOT burgers!

My first pancakes looked like this:  The one on the top left (lmao) is my first pancake...  I did EVERYTHING wrong when I made that one.  Feel free to laugh a long, hearty laugh.  I'm sure laughing at it.

And the rest of them looked like this:  They aren't spectacular, but they aren't funny at least.

  1. Well good for you for trying.
A few pancakes hints- you want to make sure the pan is hot enough before you start. If you flick some water on the pan and it dances and sizzles then you know it is hot enough.

And if it is the right temperature- you will see bubbles forming on your pancakes, when those start to pop then it is time to flip it; and yes you can always lift up the corner to pick.

Good for you for trying and learning
