Beginner Beanie Pattern

When I first started crocheting, I immediately started making hats- without patterns.  I had many that turned out way too small and a few that turned out way too big.  I started writing down what I was doing so that when I finally made one that's the perfect size, I'd be able to replicate it.  Here is my go-to hat pattern that always turns out great.  It's nothing fancy, but it's pretty much my favorite hat.  It's stretchy and durable.  In a neutral color such as brown or tan, it matches almost anything.

Size: One width fits most adults, and you can customize the length to fit you.  I'm currently working on a baby and toddler version of this hat, and when I'm done with those patterns I will link them right here.

Gauge:  Approx. 11st = 4 inches (10.2 cm) wide.  (The amount of rows in my gauge doesn't matter, you will be customizing the length of your own hat)

Materials:
  • Size J (6mm) crochet hook
  • Worsted Weight Yarn (I used Red Heart brand, but any worsted weight yarn should work)
  • Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:
  • ch3: chain 3
  • dc: double crochet
  • sc: single crochet
  • st: stitch

To start:  Ch3.  Sl st in 1st ch to create a ring.

Round 1:  Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc always) Work 9 dc in ring.  Sl st in 3rd ch of ch3. (10 dc)

Round 2:  (Do not turn in this pattern) Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around.  Sl st in 3rd ch of ch3. (20 dc)

Round 3:  Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around.  Sl st in 3rd ch of Ch3. (40 dc)

Round 4:  Ch 3, dc in next 3 st. *2 dc in next st. 1 dc in next 4 st*
Repeat from * to * around.  Sl st in 3rd ch of ch3.  (48 dc)

Round 5:  Ch 3, dc in next 4 st.  *2 dc in next st. 1 dc in next 5 st*
Repeat from * to * around.  Sl st in 3rd ch of ch3.  (56 st)

Round 6:  Ch 3, 1 dc in each st. around.  Sl st in 3rd ch of ch3.  (56 st)

Repeat Round 6 until the hat reaches desired length (try it on as you go to make sure it's a perfect fit for you!)  When I do this pattern, the had usually reaches the desired length after about 14-15 total rounds.

Last Round:  Ch 1, sc in each st around.  Sl st in 1st ch.  Weave in all ends.

  1. Nice to hear from you again Anna. Been awhile since you've left a comment so that I know you visited. Nice looking hat above.

Anna, I'd be able to help you out with some yarn for the cause; but don't want to put pressure on you, if postage is an issue.

  8. Yes, Rosemarie, the width of this hat should fit a man. Just make sure that the hat is a little longer than you'd generally make a female's hat, because I know my hubby can almost always fit in my hats but his ears stick out quite a bit. Men usually need longer hats than women. =)

  9. I just have a question.
Sorry if this is totally obvious but I am seriously a beginner and barely know anything about crocheting.

For Round 6 and on, it just says to DC in every stitch, am I still supposed to ch3 first like the other rows or not?

  10. Yes, you chain 3 at the beginning of every row. Sorry I didn't make that clear in the pattern! =)

  11. Okay just making sure :3
    No problem

  16. I would also like to know how to do this hat in a child's size, the instructions are very easy to follow and looks great so would like to use again for a child's hat, thanks :)

  17. This pattern is for adults. I haven't converted it into a child size yet, but if/when I do i will post a child-sized pattern.

And yes, Amanda, you would slip stitch in each row. Sorry I forgot to put that in the pattern!

  18. Mine is turning out to be more of a child's size for some reason... I'm following the pattern, and I'm not really doing tight stitches or anything, so I don't understand why it's so small..

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi Jill. There could be a few reasons for your size issues. First of all, did you measure your gauge? Using a smaller size yarn or smaller hook than I used will make your hat smaller than mine, and you may also be a tighter crocheter than I am. If your gauge isn't approximately 11 stitches = 4 inches wide, you will need to change yarn/hook sizes in order to obtain that approximate gauge.

If your gauge is correct, maybe you missed a row in the beginning? If you accidentally skipped one of the "increase rows" you will end up with fewer than 60 total stitches around and the hat will be too small to fit an adult.

Good luck, and I hope this helped you out!

  23. In round 4, following your directions the increase is only 8 stitches (48). In order to achieve an increase of 10 stitches I had to dC in 3 stitches and 2dc in the 4th stitch. This way I was able to increase by 10 stitches.

I had to make the same adjustment in round 5 by reducing the number of dc to every 4 stitches and then 2dc in the 5th stitch to equal 60 stitches.

  24. I use a smaller size hook, and it comes out to the perfect size for a little girl (approx 2 years old). Easy way to make a smaller scale of this hat! I also add a crochet flower to it, and it is SUPER cute for a little girl. :)

  25. Thank you so much for the pattern Anna. It's the first hat I've made, since I switched from knitting to crocheting, and I like the new lifestyle! :) Very easy to follow. Congratulations on your growing family, all the best to you!

  26. Rnd 5 should be 56 DC. If you follow the pattern as written that is the total you get.

  29. I started making your beanie for our church craft group at church to give to the homeless. I counted stitches for the first 4 round and after making sure round 5 was correct just finished without counting the stitches in round 5. Sharing the pattern with one of the ladies that count every round she couldn't make round 5 come out right. Round 5 should only have 56 stitches instead of the 58 you list on the pattern.

  30. Thank you for the simple pattrern. I used it in an unconventional way. I made 2 of them and sewed them together to make a puppet head. It was perfect. I plan on makeing a few of them to wear as hats too.

  35. This was a very easy pattern to follow! I've already made several hats for myself and now I"m about to make toddler-sized hats (which I'm going to try with a smaller hook like another commenter had mentioned).

  36. Well that was an adventure! I found out too late that my gauge was ridiculously small. But hey, I gave it to a friend with a kid so everything worked out! I'll try it again
