First of all, I know this yarn is a little "out there". I know there are many people who wouldn't use this yarn for a newborn hat, but this hat can certainly be made using any color yarn! I wouldn't normally use this yarn for a baby hat but it was scraps in my stash and the hat is for charity. I'm sending it to Caps For Good which will be shipping the donated hats out to poor countries to help keep their babies warm and healthy. If you'd like to donate a hat to that charity check out this blog. It has all the details in it, along with official sites you can visit.
Second, please don't sell this pattern or anything you make using this pattern. This pattern is free, but only for personal use. If you are going to use my pattern, I'd love it if you would write me a comment to let me know! I don't think you have to be a Blogger member to comment on mine! I want to know if anyone is getting any use out of my pattern and I'd be thrilled to see pictures of your hats! Thanks for checking out my site!
Cast on 60 stitches total- 20 stitches on each of 3 double pointed needles or 60 on a circular needle (if you have one small enough for such a small project).
Row 1 - (Knit 2, Purl 2) around
Row 2- Don't turn around, Join! (Knit 2, Purl 2) around
Row 3-31 Knit 2, Purl 2 around, just like the previous 2 rows
Row 32- Knit every stitch for the whole row, separating every 10 stitches with stitch markers. If you are using double pointed needles you will have 1 stitch marker on each needle with 10 stitches on either side of it.
Row 33- (Knit 8, Knit 2 stitches together) around. These 2 stitches should always be the 2 right before the stitch marker or the last 2 on the needle if you are using DPNs.
Row 34- (Knit 7, Knit 2 stitches together) around. Just like the previous row, the 2 stitches you knit together should always be the 2 right before the stitch marker or the last 2 on the needle
Row 35- (Knit 6, Knit 2 stitches together) around
Row 36- (Knit 5, Knit 2 stitches together) around
Row 37- (Knit 4, Knit 2 stitches together) around
Row 38- (Knit 3, Knit 2 stitches together) around
Row 39- (Knit 2, Knit 2 stitches together) around
Row 40- (Knit 1, Knit 2 stitches together) around
Row 41- (Knit 2 stitches together) around There should be 6 total stitches left on your needle(s) after this row. Cut off the yarn and use a tapestry needle to pull the yarn through the remaining 6 stitches. Pull tight, and weave in your ends on the wrong side. Don't forget to fold up the brim!
Add a pom pom to the top if you're feeling creative! I don't have a pattern for a pom pom, but I'm sure Google has plenty. Enjoy, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if my pattern doesn't seem to work right for you. I haven't had anyone test it, and I wrote it down after I finished it myself so there could certainly be a mistake!
