This hat should fit a newborn baby just about perfectly. I found a hat my son wore when he was first born and made this hat to be the exact same size as that hat. I can't guarantee every baby has the same size head my son did when he was born, but I'm pretty confident in labeling this hat size Newborn.
I used a set of 3.25mm DPNs (US size 3) and I Love This Yarn brand striping yarn in the color Seaspray Stripes. This yarn is made by Hobby Lobby, and I believe it is a worsted weight.
You may use a different size needles or different size yarn, but in order to obtain the correct size hat you will need to have the same gauge I used.
Gauge:
11 Stitches = 2 inches across
16 Rows = 2 inches high
Cast on 64
Rows 1-7: P1K1 Around
Rows 8-34: Knit Around
Row 35: *Knit 6, Knit 2 together* Repeat until end of row
Row 36-37: Knit Around
Row 38: *Knit 5, Knit 2 together* Repeat until end of row
Row 39: Knit Around
Row 40: *Knit 4, Knit 2 together* Repeat until end of row
Row 41: Knit Around
Row 42: *Knit 3, Knit 2 together* Repeat until end of row
Row 43: *Knit 2, Knit 2 together* Repeat until end of row
Row 44: *Knit 1, Knit 2 together* Repeat until end of row
Row 45: Knit 2 together around
Row 46: Knit 2 together around: Now you should have 4 stitches left on your needles. Cut your yarn (leaving at least a 6" tail for sewing in), draw the yarn through the remaining 4 stitches, and then weave in your ends.

Hello, I am very happy to have your pattern as my daughter is expecting her second baby, a girl, aprx. Dec 3. We are all very excited, especially her big sister who is 2 1/2. Thank you for a simple pattern & I will be using variegated yarn also. Lynn in OK, USA
ReplyDeletePS from Lynn: Congrats on your second baby! I had 3 & the joy is just as overflowing for each of them. Labor is shorter too!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the pattern, Anna. I have a question: Did you truly use just 3.25 mm needles for the hat? I ask because that's much smaller than what I'd expect to use with worsted weight yarn. Just wanting to make sure it's not a typo!
ReplyDeleteYour little guy is so precious and congratulations on your new little one!
Yes, I did use very small needles to make this hat. Not sure why, I think it's just because they're my favorite set. ;-D The hat doesn't feel stiff or anything from using small needles with worsted weight yarn, so it didn't seem to cause any problems whatsoever. I don't really follow a lot of patterns so I usually make my own and work out my own gauge. I didn't even realize how unusual it is to use needles that size with worsted weight! Thanks for the question!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks to all of you for your comments about my son and congratulations on the new one I have on the way. I'm truly blessed!
Just made it last night/this morning...I added an i-cord at the end and tied a knot to mimic and "umbilical cord." It's just so cute! Thanks for the great pattern.
ReplyDeleteJust finished this pattern and it looks awesome! Thanks for sharing. I had a gauge swatch of 8 stitches=2 in wide and 8 rows=2 inches tall so I cast on 48 stitches and followed the rest of the direction accordingly. It seems about right. I have yet to try in on a newborn though. My friend is expecting in January so we'll find out then if it fits! :)
ReplyDeleteHi I am just wondering how I would go about adjusting the size if I wanted to make a larger or smaller hat. I am new at this so any advice would be very helpful. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the pattern has a 8 stitch increase. I had to make mine a bit bigger so I added 8 stitches and then added one row when decreasing so I would end up with the 4 stitches. I started my decrease rows with knit 7 knit 2 together.
DeleteJust finished this, I made a basic knit blanket for a friend of mine and this was just perfect for the extra yarn! As a beginning knitter, this was great. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWould it be possible to knit this flat instead of around and sew the seam up?
ReplyDeletewhat does knit around mean, i a beginner and was just going to knit this normally but thought it might not work the same?
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering the same thing. Can we use straight needles to knit this?
DeleteEst-il possible d’avoir le patron du dessin avec les couleurs autrement dit le diagramme. Merci beaucoup il est très joli.
