Since this is such a long post with a bunch of different topics, I'm going to briefly summarize what it's about! The first paragraph is about my hubby's new job. After that I will talk about my current crochet projects for a few paragraphs, and then I will end with a paragraph about my son Ricky. Thanks for reading!
Eric's Job: So Eric's last job didn't work out. There was a huge fire in the factory and they "temporarily" let all the new people go until they got the machines all working again. They didn't officially fire him, but he got tired of waiting to go back. He applied for a management position at a local restaurant, and he nailed it! He's going to start training on Sunday and then after his training period they will be discussing his salary. That's right, I said salary (not hourly wage!). It seems like it's going to be a great job for him and he's pretty excited. He's always wanted to have a management position at a restaurant. I'm excited to have some money coming in again, but I'm not so excited about Eric working again. I love having him home, and it's especially great having him here to help with Ricky now that I'm pregnant again. Oh well, I'm proud of him, and once we get a steady flow of income we'll be able to once again support my yarn habit.
Crochet Projects: Speaking of my yarn habit- I had enough yarn laying around to work on 2 baby blankets, one of which was already in progress. I started working on that one a month or 2 ago, actually, and it's a granny square blanket. The color combinations in that blanket are really modern and cool, with some shades of pink, blue/green, black, and grey. It's definitely feminine because 3 of the colors are pink/maroon so I kind of hope the baby is a girl so I can use it! It looks a lot better than my description lets on, and I'm actually surprised how much I love it.
The 2nd blanket I'm working on right now is a striped crochet blanket. It's going to have have 6 6-inch stripes in the colors: lime green, light orange, red-orange, red, yellow, and dark blue. I've just about finished the lime green section (it's the first section) and it's 14 rows of double crochet. The blanket will be approximately 36X37 inches because it got a little wider than I had planned. I bought all this yarn with the intention of knitting 6 inch squares with each color and then combining them together to make diagonal stripes. I made a square in each color and although I loved the way it was going to look and feel, I was irritated with how flimsy the squares were. They didn't hold their shape very well and I was already overwhelmed at the idea of combining them all properly. I decided I wanted a nice clean, simple blanket for the baby. I love the texture a simple double-crochet stitch provides over a large piece. It makes little horizontal ridges along the rows that makes the blanket look nice and crisp. I'm amazed that I seem to have enough yarn to complete the blanket in crochet (since crochet uses more yarn) but I haven't run out of lime green yet and I'm on the last row of it. Each of the colors are the same brand/size yarn so I'm sure I'll have the same amount left over of each color. I don't think I'm going to put a border on the blanket because I don't feel that the rows look messy on the ends. The one thing I like about borders is that they sort of clean up the blanket and pull it together, but I don't think it will need cleaned up or pulled together. We'll see, though. If it needs a border I'll put one on. And if I have extra yarn (I think I will) I'm going to make a little baby hat to match.
When I was pregnant with my son I taught myself how to crochet again (my grandma taught me basic stuff when I was a kid, before she passed away) and I wanted to make my baby something. So I bought Crocheting for Dummies and expanded my skills. I made my son tons of hats and a blanket. But the hats were almost all too small and the blanket was too fuzzy. He got the fuzzies on his fingers all the time and tried to eat them. I also made him a sweater which hardly went over his head on the first day he was born, because the head hole wasn't stretchy at all. The whole sweater just didn't fit him well, but we did manage to take pictures of him in it when we were in the hospital with him. That's the last time he ever wore it.
This time around I'm making the new baby a nice clean blanket (Ricky's blanket failure taught me a lesson) and I already made the baby a cardigan which opens up and buttons down the front to avoid a head hole disaster. I also made the baby a hat that will surely be big enough and I plan on making tons more. I'm doing things right this time around. I just wish the things I made for my son hadn't been so bad.
Ricky: One more thing. I'd love to make Ricky a new blanket before the next baby is born. I don't want him to be left out! He doesn't use the other blanket I made him because he'd probably still eat the fuzzies, and he deserves a better blanket now that I know what I'm doing! Once we get money coming in again I think I'll go get some more yarn and start working on a Big Brother blanket for him. Besides, he'll need a special blankie for a big boy bed. Before we know it he'll be using one of those. He's growing so fast but he's really the love of my life. We may have frequent financial problems, but he's always got food in his belly, a roof over his head, and unlimited Mommy and Daddy kisses. I've never seen a toddler smile and giggle as much as him in my life, and when everything else is going wrong it is such a relief to know that at least my son is happy.
